Castlegate Dental Centre has invested in a state-of-the-art AirFlow to enhance your dental hygienist and implant treatment using guided biofilm therapy.
This is some of the most advanced equipment available to help maintain your oral health and is a considerable improvement for both your patient experience and the treatment of your gingival conditions.
What is guided biofilm therapy?
Systematic, predictable solution for dental biofilm (dental plaque) management in professional prophylaxis using AIRFLOW, PERIOFLOW and PIEZON technologies. GBT is a minimally invasive technique to manage dental plaque, that reduces the use of abrasive and sometimes sensitive instruments and equipment and results in a better outcome regarding plaque levels in the mouth.
WHAT IS DENTAL BIOFILM?
A biofilm comprises any group of microorganisms in which cells stick to each other and then to a surface. In the mouth, biofilm is dental plaque. Many patients understand that plaque is bacteria, and therefore damaging to both gums and teeth. However, they fail to understand that plaque changes over time; immature plaque is far less damaging than the plaque that has been left on gum tissue and teeth for an extended period of time. High levels of plaque, left against gum tissue is the cause in most cases of gingivitis and periodontitis.
THE AIM OF GBT
Dental plaque is damaging for gums and teeth, it causes both gum disease and dental decay. GBT aims to both REDUCE the AMOUNT, and also stop the REGROWTH, of dental biofilm. AIRFLOW PLUS POWDER prevents biofilm-forming as rapidly in the mouth. It acts underneath the gum tissue, around dental implants, bridges and orthodontic appliances, by clearing the plaque in these areas and then slowing down the regrowth. Most patients worry that hygiene sessions will cause pain and sensitivity, and unfortunately ultrasonic cleaners and hand scaling can sometimes be painful. The aim of GBT is to provide more effective biofilm management using a pain-free technique. Airflow and Perioflow are jets of water that are warned to body temperature. The powder is contained within the water and uses kinetic energy to remove plaque. Once it is then clean the remaining powder acts as a gentle antibacterial to slow down the production of plaque. The powder used is a Polyol. This type of compound is used as a sweetener in food products, it is completely safe for use in both adults and children. There are some contra-indications for use so please ask your dentist or hygienist if you are unsure.
HOW IS AIRFLOW USED?
In an Airflow or Perioflow session, plaque is disclosed in the patient’s mouth, this makes it visible to both patient and clinician. The jet of water is then used to remove the biofilm. As it is non-abrasive to soft and hard tissue, it can be used on the tongue, cheeks, gums, root surfaces and teeth. As already discussed, it can also be used on orthodontic appliances, dental appliances, implants, bridges, crowns and veneers.
ARE THERE OTHER BENEFITS OF USING AIRFLOW AND PERIOFLOW?
Due to the nature of the powder, Airflow and Perioflow are also excellent at stain removal. Most patients do not require their teeth to be polished following the use of this system, and most report their teeth feeling smoother and remaining smoother for longer.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR AIRFLOW?
If you would like more information regarding GBT, Airflow and Perioflow please speak to your dentist or your hygienist before or at your next appointment.
AirFlow treatment is a pleasant and comfortable oral cleansing therapy using a combination of air, sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder and a gentle jet stream of water to clean the surfaces of your teeth. It takes just one appointment to leave your teeth feeling smooth, clean, polished and ready to smile with confidence. The AirFlow Master uses two handpieces; AirFlow and PerioFlow. The PerioFlow handpiece is the best gentle, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, and is also the only clinically supported implant cleaning method of its kind.
AirFlow uses air, sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder and a gentle jet stream of water to remove surface stains caused by tobacco, food and drink. It is kind to the tooth surface and will significantly improve the brightness and give you a noticeably sparkling fresh healthy mouth in an instant. You will immediately see and feel the difference.
Cleaning sensitive teeth
Those with sensitive teeth who find ultrasonic scaling treatments too uncomfortable often prefer the gentle AirFlow system. Although AirFlow cannot remove hard tartar, it removes plaque biofilm, stains and early calculus deposits – cleaning and polishing in one single procedure.
PerioFlow Treatment is ideal for
The Air-Flow Master’s ‘PerioFlow’ attachment is the only clinically supported implant cleaning method of its kind – it has been proven to decisively contribute to the long-term preservation of implants. It is gentle on implant surfaces, while traditional metal instruments have been shown to scratch implant surfaces and increase surface roughness.
Gum disease treatment
The PerioFlow handpiece has revolutionised the way we treat gum disease. It is an advanced treatment for periodontal disease for sustained bacteria reduction. The PerioFlow’s flexible, rubber tip can reach the deepest pockets in the most comfortable, minimally-invasive way – meaning a much more comfortable and effective treatment for our patients compared to traditional metal tips on handpieces.
Cleaning Dentures, braces and other orthodontic appliances
The soft and gentle spray of the airflow is the ideal solution for cleaning dentures and orthodontic appliances. The powder spray is comfortable and perfectly safe to use on bracket surfaces, removing any build-up of plaque or surface staining to the bracket or tooth.
